What visa category are you applying for?

This tool provides guidance based on publicly available rules. Final eligibility is determined by the US Embassy. Our visa experts can help you navigate the official application process.

What is US Visa Dropbox (Interview Waiver)?

The US Visa Dropbox, officially known as the Interview Waiver Program (IWP), is a facility that allows eligible visa renewal applicants to submit their documents at a Visa Application Center (VAC) without attending an in-person interview at the US Embassy or Consulate.

Instead of traveling to the Embassy in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, or Kolkata for an interview, eligible applicants can simply drop off their documents at a nearby VAC location. The consular officer reviews your application remotely and makes a decision based on your documents and previous visa history.

Benefits of Dropbox

  • Faster Processing: 3-7 business days vs. weeks/months for interview slots
  • No Interview Stress: Skip the consular interview entirely
  • Convenience: Multiple VAC locations across India
  • Flexible Scheduling: More appointment availability than interview slots

Dropbox vs Regular Interview

Aspect Dropbox Interview
Wait Time for Slot Days to weeks 300-500+ days
Processing Time 3-7 business days Same + wait time
Location Any VAC Embassy only
In-Person Required No Yes

How US Dropbox Rules Changed (2024–2026)

Pre-2025 (Pandemic Era)

48-month eligibility window for visa renewal via Dropbox. Most visa categories eligible.

February 18, 2025

12-month rule reinstated. Visa must be still valid or have expired within the last 12 months (down from 48 months).

  • Affects all visa categories
  • Full validity requirement for B1/B2
  • Must be 18+ when previous visa issued

October 1, 2025 (current rule)

Major restrictions took effect. Dropbox now ends for most visa categories, and the under-14 / over-79 exemption was removed.

No Longer Eligible

  • H1B, H4 (Work visas)
  • L1, L2 (Transfer visas)
  • F1, J1 (Student/Exchange)
  • O1, E1, E2 (Specialty)

Still Eligible

  • B1/B2 (Tourist/Business)
  • A, G, NATO (Diplomatic)

What This Means For You

If you hold an H1B, L1, F1, or similar work/student visa, you now need to schedule an in-person interview for renewals (the waiver ended for these categories on October 1, 2025). Given current wait times in India, plan your travel and renewals well in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is US Visa Dropbox (Interview Waiver Program)?

The US Visa Dropbox, officially called Interview Waiver Program (IWP), allows eligible visa renewal applicants to submit their documents at a Visa Application Center (VAC) without appearing for an in-person interview at the US Embassy or Consulate. This significantly reduces processing time and eliminates the need to travel to major cities for interviews.

What is the current eligibility window for Dropbox in 2026?

The eligibility window is 12 months. Your previous US visa must have expired within the last 12 months (or still be valid), not 48 months as it was during the pandemic. This 12-month rule took effect on February 18, 2025 and remains in force in 2026.

Is Dropbox available for H1B visa holders?

No. Since October 1, 2025, the Dropbox (Interview Waiver) facility is no longer available for H1B, H4, L1, L2, F1, J1, O1, E1, and E2 visa categories. Only B1/B2 tourist and business visa renewals remain eligible, along with certain diplomatic classifications (A, C-3, G, NATO, TECRO E-1).

Who is eligible for Dropbox in 2026?

In 2026, only B1/B2 applicants who meet ALL these conditions qualify: (1) Previous visa still valid or expired within the last 12 months, (2) Previous visa had full 10-year validity, (3) Applicant was 18 or older when the previous visa was issued, (4) No prior visa refusals or 221(g), (5) Renewing in the same visa category, (6) Applying in their country of nationality or residence. First-time applicants and most applicants under 14 or over 79 must attend an in-person interview.

What is the 12-month rule for US Visa Dropbox?

The 12-month rule means your previous US visa must not have expired more than 12 months ago to qualify for Dropbox. If your visa expired more than 12 months ago, you must schedule an in-person interview at the US Embassy/Consulate.

Can I use Dropbox if my previous visa was less than 10 years validity?

No. For B1/B2 visa renewals, your previous visa must have been issued with full 10-year validity to qualify for Dropbox. If you received a visa with shorter validity (e.g., 1 year or 5 years), you are not eligible for Interview Waiver.

Does prior visa denial disqualify me from Dropbox?

Yes. Any previous visa denial or refusal in ANY visa category permanently disqualifies you from the Interview Waiver Program. You must attend an in-person interview. This includes 221(g) administrative processing refusals.

What documents are required for US Visa Dropbox in India?

Required documents include: Valid passport, DS-160 confirmation page, Appointment confirmation letter, One 2x2 inch photo, Previous US visa (if in old passport, bring both), DS-160 barcode page, and any supporting documents specific to your visa category.

How long does Dropbox processing take in India?

Dropbox processing typically takes 3-7 business days in India, though it can vary based on administrative processing requirements. You can track your passport status on the official US visa appointment portal for real-time updates.

Which VAC locations in India accept Dropbox applications?

You can submit your Dropbox documents at any of the five Visa Application Centers (VACs) in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata at no cost, regardless of your residence. Documents can also be dropped at six designated Document Drop-off Centers for a fee of around β‚Ή850 per application. Note that B1/B2 Interview Waiver appointments themselves are now centralized and adjudicated through New Delhi.

Can I apply for Dropbox from outside India?

You can apply for Dropbox from select countries including Canada, Mexico, and others. However, third-country national rules apply, and eligibility may vary. It is recommended to apply from your country of residence or nationality.

What happens if I am not eligible for Dropbox?

If you are not eligible for Dropbox, you must schedule an in-person visa interview at a US Embassy or Consulate. Wait times vary by location - currently 300-500+ days for B1/B2 interviews in India. Consider applying early or exploring interview slots in other countries.

Is the 221(g) administrative processing a disqualifying factor?

Yes. If you received Form 221(g) (administrative processing/refusal) on any previous visa application, you are not eligible for Dropbox. You must appear for an in-person interview where the consular officer can review your case.

Can children under 14 use Dropbox?

Since October 1, 2025, applicants under 14 and over 79 generally require an in-person interview. Previously they were exempt. Limited exceptions apply for certain diplomatic visa classifications. Most child and senior applicants should plan for an interview appointment.

How do I schedule a Dropbox appointment in India?

To schedule Dropbox: (1) Complete the DS-160 form online, (2) Create a profile on the official US visa appointment portal, (3) Pay the MRV fee ($185 for B1/B2), (4) Schedule your VAC appointment selecting the "Interview Waiver" option, (5) Visit the VAC on your appointment date with required documents.
