The changes aim to better align graduate pathways with New Zealand’s workforce needs while supporting international education.

Expanded Post Study Work Visa Eligibility

From late 2026, New Zealand will broaden eligibility for the existing Post Study Work Visa. Graduates completing a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF level 7 in New Zealand can now apply, provided they also hold a bachelor’s degree earned either in New Zealand or overseas.

Applicants must complete the full duration of the diploma programme in New Zealand and provide their bachelor’s degree certificate and official academic transcript. The Post Study Work Visa duration will match the time spent studying the diploma in New Zealand.

Immigration officials may verify overseas qualifications’ authenticity, though international qualification assessments are not required for overseas bachelor’s degrees.

Impact for Indian Students

These changes create clearer pathways for Indian graduates to transition from study to work in New Zealand. The six-month window provides crucial time to secure employment that meets New Zealand’s skills requirements.
