India e-OCI Card Launch: What Indian Diaspora Must Know

India launched the digital e-OCI card on 8 July 2026, replacing physical booklets and scrapping mandatory renewal on passport change for OCI holders.

India has launched a fully digital Overseas Citizen of India credential, effective 8 July 2026. The Government of India, under the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules 2026, now issues newly approved OCI holders a secure, app-based electronic card — the e-OCI — in place of the physical maroon booklet that has been standard for two decades.

What the e-OCI Card Changes for OCI Holders

The Bureau of Immigration confirmed two immediate changes alongside the launch. First, existing physical OCI booklets remain valid but no longer need to be carried when travelling. Second, the long-standing requirement to apply for re-issuance each time a holder obtains a new passport after turning 20 or 50 has been removed entirely.

Under the new system, OCI holders simply upload their new passport details through the OCI Services portal. The digital card is re-linked within 48 hours of that upload. The entire process — applications, status checks, and profile updates — can now be completed online. The only exception is a short in-person interview required for those applying on the basis of marriage to an Indian national.

e-OCI at Indian Airports and Security Standards

Airlines have begun integrating e-OCI QR-code scanning into mobile boarding passes. Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru airports will accept the e-OCI at automated immigration gates later in the third quarter of 2026.

On data security, the Ministry of Home Affairs states the e-OCI uses the same encryption standard applied to India’s e-passport chip. Crucially, no biometric data is stored on the user’s device. A lost phone does not expose the credential; the QR code can be regenerated after logging in from a replacement handset.

The e-OCI system also connects to India’s Fast-Track Immigration – Trusted Travellers Programme (FTI-TTP). By 2027, all OCI holders are expected to be pre-vetted for FTI-TTP, enabling use of automated walk-through gates on arrival in India.

For OCI holders who travel frequently or manage short-notice trips — particularly business travellers and multinational assignees of Indian origin — the removal of booklet logistics addresses a practical friction point. Employers note that dropping physical booklet requirements reduces mobilisation time for senior executives travelling to India on short notice.

Before travelling, use our Document Checklist to confirm which credentials you need to carry under the new rules, and check our Eligibility Checker if you are applying for OCI status for the first time.
