UAE visa extension guide for Indian passport holders. Covers 30-day extension process via GDRFA (Dubai) and ICP (other emirates), fees (AED 600-1,000), overstay fines (AED 50/day), required documents, online process, travel agency extension option, and emergency extensions during airspace disruptions. Updated March 2026.
Your 30-day UAE tourist visa is running out, but your trip isn’t done. Whether you’re extending a Dubai holiday, waiting for a business deal to close, or just not ready to leave — the UAE allows visa extensions, and the process is mostly online.
But there’s one rule that catches most Indians off guard: there is no grace period on tourist visas. The AED 50/day overstay fine starts ticking from the day your visa expires. Here’s how to extend before that happens.
UAE Visa Extension: What You Can Extend
| Visa Type | Extension Possible | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| 30-day Tourist Visa | Yes | 30 days per extension |
| 60-day Tourist Visa | Yes | 30 days per extension |
| 14-day Tourist Visa | Yes | 30 days |
| Transit Visa (48/96 hrs) | No | N/A |
| Visit Visa (friend/relative) | Yes | 30 days |
| Multiple Entry Tourist | Yes | 30 days per extension |
Maximum stay: Most tourists cannot exceed 180 days in a calendar year on tourist/visit status, including all extensions.
Two Ways to Extend Your UAE Visa
Option 1: Through Your Travel Agency (Easiest for Indians)
If your visa was processed through a travel agency, the extension must go through them. You cannot extend independently if an agency processed your original visa.
Through your agency’s UAE extension service, the process is:
- Contact your agency with your visa copy and passport details
- Pay the extension fee
- Receive your extended visa electronically within 2-3 working days
This is the most common route for Indian tourists since most UAE visas for Indians are processed through agencies.
Option 2: Through GDRFA/ICP (Self-Service)
If you applied independently, you can extend online:
For Dubai: GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs) smart services portal
For other emirates: ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security) website
The self-service process:
- Log into the GDRFA or ICP portal
- Select “Extend Visit Visa” service
- Upload required documents
- Pay the fee online
- Receive the extended visa electronically (typically within 48 hours)
Documents Required
| Document | Details |
|---|---|
| Passport copy | Bio page + UAE visa page |
| Current visa copy | The e-visa or visa sticker |
| Passport photo | Recent, white background |
| Emirates ID application | For extensions beyond 30 days |
| Proof of accommodation | Hotel booking or host’s tenancy contract |
| Return flight booking | Confirmed departure within the new validity period |
Extension Fees
| Channel | Approximate Cost |
|---|---|
| GDRFA self-service (Dubai) | AED 600-1,000 (~₹13,500-22,500) |
| ICP self-service (other emirates) | AED 600-800 (~₹13,500-18,000) |
| Through travel agency | Varies — check with your agency |
Fees include AED 10 Knowledge Dirham + AED 10 Innovation Dirham + service charges.
Overstay Fines: No Grace Period
This is the part most Indians underestimate. The UAE recently updated its overstay fine structure — and unlike some countries that offer a buffer:
| Situation | Fine |
|---|---|
| Per day overstay | AED 50 (~₹1,125) |
| Departure fine (if overstayed) | AED 320 (~₹7,200) |
| 10 days overstay | AED 820 (~₹18,500) |
| 30 days overstay | AED 1,820 (~₹41,000) |
| 90 days overstay | AED 4,820 (~₹1,08,500) |
The fines start the day your visa expires. There is no informal grace period for tourist visas. Immigration checks at Dubai airport are strict — overstay fines are calculated and collected before you’re allowed to board your flight home.
Emergency Extensions (March 2026 Update)
Due to the West Asia conflict and regional airspace disruptions, the UAE government announced emergency visa extensions and overstay fine waivers for stranded travelers:
- Tourist, visit, and transit visas expiring between 28 February and 31 March 2026 received an automatic 30-day grace period
- Travelers with cancelled flights can apply free of charge for a further 30-day extension
- A one-year humanitarian stay permit is available for those who can document being stranded
- Indians stranded in the UAE can also benefit from special overstay waivers
This is a temporary measure. Check current status before relying on it.

Can You Extend Without Leaving the UAE?
Yes — that’s the whole point of the extension. You apply online (GDRFA/ICP) or through your travel agency while inside the UAE. There’s no need to exit and re-enter. The extension is processed electronically and your new visa validity is updated in the system.
This is different from the old “visa run” method where people would take a bus to Oman’s Hatta border, exit the UAE, and re-enter for a fresh stamp. While border runs still technically work, they’re more expensive (bus + Oman entry fee + time) and riskier than simply paying for an extension. The extension route is cleaner and doesn’t create multiple entry stamps on your passport.
Tips for Indian Travelers
-
Start the extension process 7+ days early — Don’t wait until the last day. Even online processing takes 48 hours, and document issues can delay things further.
-
Keep your visa copy accessible — Store a digital copy of your UAE visa in your phone. You’ll need it for the extension application and if stopped by authorities.
-
Budget for the extension upfront — If you know you might stay longer, factor in AED 600-1,000 for the extension. It’s far cheaper than AED 50/day in overstay fines.
-
Check your agency — If a travel agency processed your original visa, they must handle the extension. Trying to extend through GDRFA independently will be rejected.
-
Don’t overstay hoping to pay at the airport — While you can technically pay overstay fines at departure, it creates an immigration record that may affect future UAE visa applications. Note: the UAE has temporarily allowed expired visa holders to return without a new permit until March 31, 2026 — but this is an emergency measure, not standard policy.
